June 8 - World Oceans Day

On June 8th, World Oceans Day is celebrated with the aim of drawing attention to the importance of the ocean and bringing people together to help conserve them through various actions that can be done individually on the day or in continuous actions throughout the day. whole year.

Despite being celebrated as Oceans Day, the World Ocean Day Organization develops the #droptheS campaign that brings to light the perspective where all the oceans we know are actually part of the same global ocean, interconnected and without borders, thus all action carried out at any point in this ocean will end up affecting the entire ocean.

Did you know that we were taught that there are four oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and Arctic, but recently a fifth ocean was recognized? The Antarctic – by the renowned National Geographic Society and US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The recognition of this fifth ocean by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), which works with the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) to standardize names on an international scale, is still missing.

Some curiosities:

  • The global ocean is made of salt water and covers 71% of the Earth's surface.

  • Portugal has around 2500 km of coastline bathed by the Atlantic Ocean.

  • The Economia Azul website has much more information.

  • Action that will be developed in Portugal: Praia do Magoito

  • There is a lot of information on the World Ocean Day website , it's worth going there.
