List of Materials and Equipment for all open water swimmers

Many people may think that swimming in open water is just being in the sea and taking a few laps. It may be, but for safe swimming you need to be careful with some equipment that I will list below.

And of course, depending on distance, time, weather and sea conditions, some become mandatory so that safety is minimally guaranteed.

  • plastic bag or a pair of gloves to make it easier to put on the suit and then store wet items

  • buoy (with compartment for storing things)

  • whistle (the kind without a ball inside)

  • waterproof bag for small items (mobile phone, keys, documents)

  • cell phone and identification document (you never know…)

  • colored cap (preferably colors that attract attention)

  • glasses (there are a multitude of options, but remember they are for outdoor use)

  • isothermal suit (the more colorful the better, here there is also a wide variety of brands, thicknesses, cuts and prices)

  • cap, boots and isothermal gloves (for very cold sea days it's worth the investment)

  • an energy bar or gel (depending on the distance and the meal you had beforehand, you may get hungry and lose energy during the activity)

For after swimming:

  • a robe or poncho to change clothes (very useful)

  • rug, pallet or something to place on the floor and be comfortable to take off your suit without getting it dirty and not having your feet on the wet and often dirty floor.

  • a bottle of fresh water (to remove sand from your feet, body and wash your face)

To diversify your training you can also have:

  • paddles (medium size) to correct the position of the hands when entering and rowing underwater and giving more work to the shoulder, triceps and back muscles.

  • fins (not very long) that can be used to give strength to the legs and glutes or also to rest, depending on the intensity and frequency of the leg beats.

Do you use any materials/equipment that I didn’t mention? Share with us and don't forget swim4fun and stay safe ;)
