The National Open Water Circuit in Portugal will begin!
The CNAA 2024 exam season is starting! It will begin on May 18th in Porto Santo - Madeira and over the 5 months, 17 competitions will run across the country, with the last competition in Sesimbra, on October 5th.

The events are distributed over different distances between 2,500m and 5,000m, with a wide geographical distribution, covering almost all areas of the country.
Not all races are just for federates, many have so-called presentation races, to encourage more swimmers to participate , with a maximum distance of 2,000m.
For anyone thinking about participating in events to count points for the national circuit, you need to know some rules.
- be federated in the Portuguese Swimming Federation in the open water categories and depending on your age, as Open Water Master;
- they can be federated through a club or individual;
- registrations with the CNAA can be made until 7/15/2024;
- the Masters are all practitioners over 20 years of age;
- the competitions are held at sea, river or reservoirs;
- the events may have different regulations, but they all follow the rules of the FPN, which in turn follows the rules of World Aquatics (formerly FINA), especially regarding the use of isothermal or non-approved equipment and suits.
Regarding the use of isothermal suits, item 4 of Regulation 2023-2024 says :
4.7. The use of isothermal suits depending on the water temperature is permitted.
4.8. For races with water temperatures equal to 20ºC or higher, isothermal suits are not permitted . Suits made of textile material cannot extend beyond the shoulders, neck and ankles, respecting all other requirements as specified for swimming pool suits.
For events with temperatures equal to 18ºC or higher, and below 20ºC, the isothermal suit is optional.
It is mandatory to use an isothermal suit when the water is less than 18ºC , not inclusive.
Regarding these rules, isothermal suits are suits that produce thermal insulation. Isothermal suits, for both men and women, must cover the torso, back, shoulders and knees. But they cannot extend beyond the neck, ankles and wrists.
These rules also apply to swimmers in the Masters category.
